Plot summary
Morrison, a bounty hunter, hauls a body across the prairie. Farley Deeds, a clerk, is traveling toward a reunion with his wife. The two strangers meet and share a campfire, and to pass the hours they trade stories, each angling to unsettle the other. Morrison goes first with a tale of an Indian tribe taking revenge on Lee, an irritable old man who has desecrated their burial ground. When that fails to land, he offers a second story about Tom, who comes to the aid of Jenny, a seductive woman who appears to be pregnant and in trouble. Deeds answers with a homesteader tale of his own, about Arthur, a father pressed into a lynch mob.
