Plot summary
Kate leaves her fiancé at the altar and drives alone through Riverton, Arizona. Hooves sound outside her car, though no rider is visible; she pulls over and disappears in a cloud of dust. Langley is sent to the car she left behind. A horseman fires at him, and a stray bullet bursts the fuel tank, so he continues on foot and comes across a town set back from the road. He sleeps in an empty building and wakes to figures from the town's past: Grace, who tends bar, a blind gambling dealer, and a blacksmith with his daughter Etta. The town's dead are in the grip of the outlaw Devlin and his gang, who keep them hostage until a lawman can put the outlaws down.
