Plot summary
Ira Wells, an aging private detective in Los Angeles, is putting his life story on paper at his boarding house when Harry Regan, the partner he once worked with, arrives badly wounded and dies. At Harry's funeral, Charlie Hatter, an acquaintance of them both, introduces Ira to Margo Sperling. Margo wants Ira to find her cat, Winston, which was taken from her. Ira learns that Harry had been looking for the same animal when he was killed. Margo says Brian Hemphill hired her to move merchandise to Bakersfield, that she kept the money instead, and that he took her cat and is holding it until she pays him back.
