Plot summary
Peter Kristo, whom Scudder knows from Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, brings him to his brother Kenny, a drug trafficker whose wife Carrie was abducted. Kenny paid the men who took her, and they killed her anyway, leaving him a recording of what they did. Scudder, a former NYPD detective who now works unlicensed as a private investigator in New York, agrees to find them. At the New York Public Library he searches old newspapers for similar cases and meets TJ, a homeless teenager who helps him read. Reports of two other women, Leila Andresen and Marie Gotteskind, point to men who have taken and killed before.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Harrison Ford was in talks to play detective Matt Scudder back in May 2002, with Joe Carnahan also in talks to direct for Universal Pictures and production proposed for January 2003, but Ford dropped out because he was concerned about the darkness in the character of Scudder.
- Scott Frank and Steven Soderbergh spent three weeks recutting the entire film together, and twenty minutes in total were removed from the original cut of the picture.
- Gilroy suggested eliminating scenes with Jo Durkin, a cop friend from Scudder's past played by Ruth Wilson, and another cut subplot featured Neeson's real-life son Micheál Richardson as Scudder's son; Neeson supported that removal, saying it cluttered things up.
