Russell Hayden

Biography

Russell Hayden was an American actor who worked in film and television and was best known for playing Lucky Jenkins in Paramount's Hopalong Cassidy Westerns. Born in Chico, he made his screen debut in the Hopalong Cassidy film Hills of Old Wyoming (1937) and played Lucky Jenkins in 27 of the series' Westerns with William Boyd. In 1941 Columbia Pictures hired him for eight Westerns opposite cowboy star Charles Starrett, then gave him his own starring series. He joined Robert L. Lippert's Screen Guild Productions in 1946, playing a country parson in Rolling Home, a harness racing drama, and both hero and villain in Trail of the Mounties. In 1948 he teamed with James Ellison for a series of Western features. On television he appeared in The Marshal of Gunsight Pass and Cowboy G-Men, and in the late 1950s he produced and directed the syndicated Western series 26 Men and Judge Roy Bean, also acting in the latter.
