Plot summary
Juanita Sims has parted from Frank, her unfaithful boyfriend, and Alice Adrose asks her daughter Tangie for money. Kelly Watkins, a social worker, visits Crystal Wallace's apartment to check on her children, but Crystal's husband, the veteran and alcoholic Beau Willie Brown, sends her away. Gilda, who manages the building, tells Kelly she has already asked Social Services to look into Crystal's safety. Yasmine, who teaches dance, tells her students about Bill, a man she has met, and one of them, Nyla, Tangie's sister, mentions her coming graduation. Juanita seeks funding for her women's health nonprofit from the magazine editor Joanna Bradmore, who declines. Crystal asks Beau Willie to stop drinking; he says they must marry to qualify for welfare aid.

- Playwright Ntozake Shange, whose choreopoem the film adapts, said she had qualms about the adaptation: "I worried about his characterizations of women as plastic." Of the finished film she said, "I think he did a very fine job, although I'm not sure I would call it a finished film."
- Tyler Perry credited his earlier work for making the film possible: "It took everything-Madea, House of Payne and all of that-for me to be able to do For Colored Girls. Had none of that happened I wouldn't have been able to say, 'Listen, this is what I want to do next.'"
- Mariah Carey had been cast but pulled out in May 2010, citing medical reasons that were later revealed to be her pregnancy, and Thandiwe Newton was cast to replace her.
- Nzingha Stewart was originally set to direct, and her own screenplay adaptation of Shange's work is part of the Barnard archives; when Perry took the film over, Stewart stayed on as an executive producer.
