Biography
Janet Jackson is an American singer and songwriter who also works as an actress and dancer. Born in Gary, Indiana, she began as a child actress on television, appearing in Good Times, Diff'rent Strokes, and Fame. After signing with A&M Records in 1982, she reached global stardom with the albums Control (1986) and Rhythm Nation 1814 (1989), which helped shape new jack swing. She made her film debut in Poetic Justice (1993), then acted in Nutty Professor II: The Klumps (2000) and Why Did I Get Married? (2007). Her later albums included Janet (1993), The Velvet Rope (1997), and All for You (2001), whose title track became her tenth US number one single. Jackson has sold more than 100 million records and won five Grammy Awards, and she is also a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee.
