Plot summary
In Antarctica, the glaciologist Matt narrates the affair from the future, looking back to the night he met Lisa, an exchange student, at a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club concert at London's Brixton Academy. They are in bed together by the end of it. Over the months that follow, the pair go to gigs by The Von Bondies, Elbow, Primal Scream, The Dandy Warhols, Super Furry Animals and Franz Ferdinand, and their meetings at home and in clubs play out alongside nine live songs. The title refers to those songs, played by eight bands, and the pair's time together also includes a stay at a cottage.

- Leads Margo Stilley and Kieran O'Brien actually had sex on camera, including unsimulated penetrative sex, masturbation and oral sex, and O'Brien became the only actor ever shown ejaculating in a mainstream, UK-produced feature film.
- In Australia the Office of Film and Literature Classification gave the film an X rating, which would have prevented it from being shown theatrically and restricted sale to the Australian Capital Territory and Northern Territory; the OFLC Review Board later passed it with an R rating, although the South Australian Classification Council raised it back to X in South Australia.
- British MP Ann Widdecombe raised the film in the House of Commons and asked the Home Secretary to overturn the decision to release it uncut.
