Plot summary
Ten years after a pandemic nearly erased humanity, the ruins of San Francisco shelter a dwindling community of survivors. Their leader, Dreyfus, wants the hydroelectric dam outside the city switched back on, and Malcolm takes a small group into the forest to reach it. The woods belong to Caesar and a colony of intelligent apes who have built homes there and teach their young. Carver, one of Malcolm's people, wounds Ash, Rocket's son, and Caesar orders the humans out of his territory. Malcolm asks Dreyfus for time to talk the apes into letting him at the dam, while Caesar's lieutenant Koba, scarred by laboratory experiments, argues against trusting humans at all.

- Rupert Wyatt, who had directed Rise of the Planet of the Apes, considered walking away in September 2012 because he feared a May 2014 release date left too little time to make the sequel properly. Two weeks later Cloverfield director Matt Reeves was confirmed as his replacement.
- The apes were not the only digital animals. Weta Digital built a herd of elk with key-frame animation and the crowd software MASSIVE, a grizzly bear by key-frame animation alone, and computer-generated doubles of the live-action horses using key-frame work mixed with motion capture.
