Plot summary
The Painkiller Unit, a Special Forces team, is in Sovetskaia, Chechnya when a biochemical weapon is released and infects the soldiers. As the unit pulls back, armed men in hazmat suits ambush and kill its members. Captain Jane Browning survives, and the viral infection leaves her body repairing itself within days, with sharper senses, speed, strength and a photographic memory. A psychiatrist, Dr. Graham Knight, tries to examine her mental state, and Jane refuses to cooperate. The military tests her repeatedly, and when Colonel Ian Watts arranges a transfer to Alaska, she fears she will never be released. She escapes with Nick Pierce, a professional thief, shelters with him and his companions, then sets out to learn what was done to her.
