Plot summary
Dug is a young caveman who lives in a fertile valley with his tribe and his pet warthog, Hognob. He wants the tribe to hunt bigger prey than rabbits, but Chief Bobnar prefers to keep everyone safe. Then Lord Nooth, governor of a Bronze Age city, sends armored mammoths to wreck the village and seize the valley for its bronze ore, driving the tribe into the badlands. Dug is carried back to the city in a cart and mistaken for a footballer. There he challenges Nooth's champions to a match. The valley is the prize, and a defeat would leave his people toiling as slaves in Nooth's mines. Nooth accepts, sensing that a crowd would pay to see it, and Dug returns home with one ball to practice with.

- Early Man began life as Crood Awakening, a caveman film Aardman announced in 2005 under its DreamWorks deal, but the partnership ended soon after and DreamWorks kept Aardman's story and turned it into the 2013 film The Croods.
- Early Man was the last Aardman film to be released in US cinemas until Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom on 18 September 2026, after Netflix acquired streaming rights to later Aardman films in late 2019.
- Early Man opened on just $3.1 million, giving it the fourth-worst opening for an animated movie playing in over 2,000 theaters at the time, behind only Delgo, All Dogs Go to Heaven 2 and Teacher's Pet.
- Early Man's characters were developed with their voice actors to settle how they look, move and speak, before its 35 animators individualised them, and its crowd noise was recorded with a crowd of people at the Memorial Stadium, home to Bristol Rovers.
