Plot summary
Gru is a former supervillain now working as an Anti-Villain League agent. At a reunion at Lycée Pas Bon, he has his old classmate Maxime Le Mal arrested. Maxime has cockroach body parts and soon escapes from prison with help from his cockroach minions. He reveals a ray gun that turns people into cockroach hybrids and vows to use it on Gru's infant son Gru Jr. To protect the family, Silas Ramsbottom places Gru, Lucy, Margo, Edith, Agnes and the baby in a safe house under new identities. Meanwhile, the AVL gives five Minions superpowers as the Mega Minions, but the project is shelved after they cause heavy damage in a city.

- The Mega Minions were a discarded idea from Despicable Me 2 (2013) that director Chris Renaud resurrected, taking inspiration from Marvel's Fantastic Four and Pixar's The Incredibles and folding the Minions' own incompetence into them.
- The scene in which Poppy plays with an arcade machine started life as an animation test for the character, and the filmmakers liked it so much that they put it in the finished film.
- Returning characters had their animation rigs and surfaces updated for Despicable Me 4, and Fred McDade, unseen since the second film, was rebuilt from scratch because his old character model was too old.
