Plot summary

In Litwak's arcade, Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz are best friends, but Vanellope has grown tired of Sugar Rush's predictability. A secret track Ralph builds for her ends with the cabinet's steering wheel broken, and Mr. Litwak decides to unplug the game. Remembering that a replacement wheel is for sale on eBay, the two travel through a new Wi-Fi router into the internet, a city where websites are buildings and users are avatars. There, the search engine KnowsMore points them to eBay, where they win the wheel by mistake, driving the price to $27,001, and learn they have twenty-four hours to pay or lose it. A clickbait salesman, J. P. Spamley, offers them a way to earn money fast.

  • An early trailer gave Tiana, the African-American princess of The Princess and the Frog, a lighter skin tone and narrower nose, causing a social media backlash. Disney then worked with Tiana's voice actress Anika Noni Rose and the advocacy group Color of Change to redesign her closer to her 2009 look.
  • SPOILERThe post-credits scene begins as a fake teaser for Frozen II before cutting to Ralph rickrolling the audience with Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up". John C. Reilly, then on vacation with his family, was brought into a New York City studio for a day to record it.
  • Lucasfilm asked the filmmakers to cut a joke calling Kylo Ren a "spoiled child" from the film, saying it would undermine his role as a villain. Also cut were a gag where the princesses mockingly call C-3PO R2-D2 and BB-8, and a planned appearance by The Golden Girls.
  • Two full versions of the script were scrapped before the final story was settled on, according to head of story Josie Trinidad. One had Vanellope becoming an internet celebrity while a jailed Ralph partnered with the search engine KnowsMore to escape prison and bring her back.
  • Stan Lee, Marvel Comics' former writer, editor and publisher, makes a cameo appearance in the film. Lee died some days before the film's premiere, making his appearance in Ralph Breaks the Internet one of his final cameos in films.
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet packs in over 150 unique sets and 5,726 assets, and has the highest number of characters of any Disney Animation film: 434 individual characters with 6,752 variants.
  • The scene where Vanellope meets the Disney Princesses was pitched by co-screenwriter Pamela Ribon, who was working on Moana in 2014 when Disney began floating sequel ideas and noticed Vanellope fits the Disney Princess definition as much as Moana's title character does.
  • The design of the internet's city of websites was based on tours of One Wilshire in Los Angeles, one of the world's largest telecommunications centers. The filmmakers avoided approaching any of the non-Disney companies whose branding appears in the film.
