Plot summary
The Mundy family lives in a small house in rural Ireland in 1936. Five sisters share it: Kate, the eldest; Agnes; Maggie; Rose; and Christina. None of the five is married. Kate is the only one of them with a steady job, and she watches over the conflicting personalities in the house. Christina, known in the family as Chrissy, has a young son, Michael, and Michael's father is Gerry Evans. The household works in its own fashion until their brother Jack, a priest who is not quite himself, comes to the house, and then Gerry Evans arrives as well.
