Plot summary
Britain declares war on Germany in September 1939, and London's children are sent to the countryside for safety. William Beech, a quiet, nervous boy of ten, is placed with Tom Oakley in the Suffolk village of Little Weirwold. Tom is a widower whose wife and small son died of scarlet fever in the First World War, and he has kept to himself since. William has grown up in poverty under a cruel mother, and he expects the worst from the man taking him in. Among the belongings his mother packed for him, Tom finds a leather belt meant for beating the boy. He throws it away and begins to care for William, providing clothes, lessons and a steady home.
