Marie Mullen

Biography

Marie Mullen is an Irish actress who helped found the Druid Theatre Company in Galway and has spent much of her career on its stage. Born in 1953 and raised in Drumfin, County Sligo, she studied archaeology at NUI Galway, where she met Garry Hynes and Mick Lally and joined them in forming Druid. Her work with the company includes Conversations on a Homecoming (1985) and the role of Mary in Tom Murphy's Bailegangaire. She originated the part of Maureen in Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane, then played it on Broadway in 1998 and won a Tony Award as best actress in a play. She also appeared in The Cripple of Inishmaan Off-Broadway and in DruidSynge, and later played Mrs. Paroo in The Music Man on Broadway in a 2022 revival. Her films include Hear My Song (1991) and Circle of Friends (1995), and she received an honorary doctorate from NUI Galway in 2016.

Garry Hynes recalls that he and Mullen met at Dramsoc at UCG in 1971, when both were 17, and that he cast her in The Loves of Cass Maguire.
Behind the award
Mullen originated the role of Maureen in Martin McDonagh's The Beauty Queen of Leenane in 1996, then won the Tony for Best Actress in a Play when she played it on Broadway in 1998.
