Kathy Burke
Biography
Kathy Burke is an English actress and comedian born in London in 1964 and raised in Islington. She became familiar to television audiences through sketch shows, appearing in French and Saunders and in programs by Harry Enfield, and she played Magda on Absolutely Fabulous. Her role as Linda La Hughes in Gimme Gimme Gimme, which ran from 1999 to 2001, earned her a British Comedy Award and two BAFTA nominations. Her film debut came in Scrubbers (1982), and her performance in Nil by Mouth (1997) won Best Actress at Cannes and a BAFTA nomination. Other films include Sid and Nancy (1986), Elizabeth (1998), Dancing at Lughnasa (1998), Kevin & Perry Go Large (2000) and Once Upon a Time in the Midlands (2002). She spent much of the 2000s directing for the theater before returning to film with Pan (2015), Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie (2016) and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), and she later fronted documentaries for Channel 4.

Behind the award
For her role in Nil by Mouth, Burke received the Best Actress prize at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival. She had not planned to go because she was certain she would lose, and upon learning of her win just before the event, she discovered her passport had expired.
First role
Burke made her acting debut in Scrubbers, a 1982 film directed by Swedish actress Mai Zetterling. Set in a girls' young offenders' institute, it was regarded as a female take on the film Scum.
Behind the camera
Burke wrote and directed Mr Thomas at the Old Red Lion Theatre in February 1990. Channel 4 filmed the production and showed it the following year.
A first
Kathy Burke's first directing job for television came in 2009, when she worked on the BBC Three sketch show Horne & Corden, which starred Mathew Horne and James Corden.
