In Buffalo, New York, Edith Cushing is the daughter of Carter Cushing, a wealthy businessman, and she wants to be an author rather than a woman of marrying age. Her mother died young, and her ghost watches over her. Sir Thomas Sharpe, an English baronet, comes to Buffalo seeking investors for a digging machine meant to revive his family's clay mines, and Edith becomes enamored with him. Carter Cushing rejects the proposal. Thomas travels with his sister, Lucille. Thomas and Edith marry and go to Allerdale Hall, the Sharpes' dilapidated mansion in Cumberland, which stands over a red clay mine and is sinking into it.
