Plot summary
The Carlton Mine in Pennsylvania worked immigrant children, and in 1913 a girl named Mary was sent into a tunnel with dynamite; the explosion buried her and other children underground. Karen Tunny arrives decades later, after her husband's long illness spent the family savings, and moves her daughters Sarah and Emma into the house he grew up in. A neighbor warns them to stay indoors after dark, and Sarah hears talk of zombies in the woods. Emma insists she has a friend called Mary who lives in the mine, and William Carlton, the last of the family that owned the mine, is buying up the land around it.
