Plot summary
Dan Millman studies at a university and has become a locally famous gymnast, with a national championship as his goal, but restlessness follows him, and one morning before sunrise he runs the streets and stops at a car-service station. An old man there knows about Dan's problem in a way that unsettles him, and Dan nicknames him Socrates; he is further shaken by a nightmare in which the man appeared as a faceless janitor in mismatched shoes, and by the man's speed and agility. Dan asks to learn the secret behind that speed, and Socrates sets him tasks and lessons centered on living entirely in the present moment. Socrates also has another protégé, Joy, a woman Dan's age who has taken the philosophy into her life.
