In 2008 the Royal Shakespeare Company asked Minchin to write music and lyrics for Matilda the Musical. He had also, in the early 2000s, sought the Dahl estate's approval for a musical of the book for youth theater in Australia.

Minchin hosted Prom 40 on Saturday 13 August 2011 at the Royal Albert Hall, which was the first BBC Comedy Promenade Concert.
