Plot summary
The Miami Sharks were once a great team but are now fighting for a place in the AFFA playoffs. Tony D'Amato has coached them for thirty years under the eye of Christina Pagniacci, the owner who inherited the club from her father and wants a different approach. Her pick for the future is Nick Crozier, a young assistant brought in to run the offense. In the thirteenth game of the season, starting quarterback Jack "Cap" Rooney and his backup Tyler Cherubini both leave the field injured, and third-stringer Willie Beamen, out of the University of Houston, is sent in. He makes mistakes and does not win the game, but he plays well enough to gain confidence.

- Oliver Stone's first two choices to play Tony D'Amato were Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, and Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs was cast as Willie Beamen but dropped out amid rumors that he could not throw a football convincingly.
- Oliver Stone filmed a scene using the music of the Canadian band Godspeed You! Black Emperor, but when he asked for permission the band said no, and Stone was forced to redo the scene without the music.
- For the football game scenes, local schools supplied extras who were asked to move around between shots so that each section of the stadium looked filled, while empty seats held cardboard cutouts with balloons attached so they would seem to be in motion.
- Oliver Stone failed to get the National Football League's permission to use real NFL team logos and stadiums, so the Sharks play in the fictional Affiliated Football Franchises of America at the Miami Orange Bowl, which the Dolphins abandoned after the 1986 season.

James Woods's character is based on Rosenfeld, the doctor left treating Raiders players after several mishaps, whose first diagnosis of Cap Rooney's career-threatening injury is 'you're okay, it's just a bruise'; Shark's neck injury comes from the real Mike Harden case.- Practice scenes were filmed at the Homestead Sports Complex, built for spring-training baseball but damaged by Hurricane Andrew in 1992 and eventually torn down without ever hosting a Major League team.
