Plot summary
Charles Howard sells automobiles in California, and his dealership becomes the largest in the state. A car crash takes his son's life, and his first marriage ends. He marries Marcela Zabala, and when he buys a stable of racehorses he brings in Tom Smith to train them. Smith picks a colt named Seabiscuit, a grandson of Man o' War that the racing world considers small, lazy and unmanageable, and also hires Johnny "Red" Pollard, a jockey whose family was ruined in the Depression and who is blind in one eye from amateur boxing, to ride him. Smith's methods turn Seabiscuit into the leading racehorse on the West Coast. Howard challenges Samuel D. Riddle, owner of the Triple Crown winner War Admiral, and Riddle dismisses California racing as inferior.

- At the 76th Academy Awards, Seabiscuit received seven nominations, including Best Picture, but ultimately lost all seven, including six to The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.
- The racing scenes set at Pimlico were not shot there: Keeneland doubled for Pimlico Race Course, because Pimlico had dramatically changed physically since Seabiscuit's time.
