Kate Walsh
Biography
Kate Walsh is an American actress and businesswoman who was born in San Jose, California, and grew up in Tucson, Arizona. She studied acting at the University of Arizona, moved to New York City, and joined Burn Manhattan before working with the Piven Theatre Workshop in Chicago. Her film debut came with Normal Life (1996), and she gained attention as Will Ferrell's character's wife in Kicking & Screaming (2005). On television, she played Nicki Fifer on The Drew Carey Show starting in 1997, then had her breakout role as Dr. Addison Montgomery on Grey's Anatomy, which led to the spin-off Private Practice. She later starred in 13 Reasons Why, where critics praised her performance, and appeared in The Umbrella Academy. Her other films include Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), Legion (2010), and The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012). She founded Boyfriend LLC in 2010 and made her off-Broadway debut in Dusk Rings a Bell.

First role
In May 2010, Walsh took her first off-Broadway role, playing opposite Paul Sparks in Dusk Rings a Bell by Stephen Belber. The Atlantic Theater Company staged the play's world premiere.
Early training
Walsh attended the University of Arizona to study acting but left before finishing. She then moved to New York City, where she waitressed to support herself and became part of the comedy troupe Burn Manhattan.
A change of course
Before she became a model and taught English in Japan in the 1980s, Walsh had jobs at fast-food outlets. She later settled in Chicago, where she worked with the Piven Theatre Workshop.
