Plot summary
An unnamed puppy, born wild, is caught and taken to the pound, and his life ends there. He wakes again as a Red Retriever in a cage at a puppy mill. A customer turns him down and the cage is left unlocked, so he slips out through a gap in the fence. Two men find him on the road and pick him up, meaning to make money selling him, then leave him shut in their truck without water while they go inside a building. He is close to dying when a boy and his mother break the window and carry him away. The boy is Ethan, and his mother is Elizabeth; his father Jim is reluctant about keeping a dog. Bailey, as Ethan names him, learns the house and the yard.
