Plot summary
On Mars, Kimar and his wife Momar find their children Girmar and Bomar watching Earth television, where station KID-TV is interviewing Santa Claus at the North Pole. The 800-year-old sage Chochem traces the children's joylessness to a Martian upbringing that feeds lessons into young minds by machine and leaves no time for play, and he says Mars needs a Santa Claus of its own. Kimar assembles a crew and sets out to abduct one, though Voldar argues against the plan. On Earth they cannot tell the real Santa from the many impersonators, so they take two children, Billy and Betty, who know where he lives. The clumsy Dropo is left to watch the pair on the flight to the North Pole.

- The film spawned a tongue-in-cheek novelization by Lou Harry, published in 2005, which retells the story through a now-adult Girmar, who has succeeded her father as ruler of Mars and narrates in valley-girl slang.
- A second theatrical adaptation, which premiered in 2006 at the Maverick Theater in Fullerton, California and was adapted by Brian Newell and Nick McGee, became a local tradition staged there every holiday season, with a 10th-anniversary production in December 2015.
