Dark Journey (1937) on Netflix

Plot summary

Madeleine Goddard owns a fashionable dress shop in Stockholm and travels to Paris to buy gowns for it. The city is neutral ground in the last spring of World War I. Baron Karl Von Marwitz enters Sweden saying he left the German Navy because of his wounds, though former comrades call him a deserter. One evening Madeleine goes to a nightclub with her friend Bob Carter and watches Von Marwitz play a game in which he predicts what a woman will say after he kisses her. She exposes the trick, and he is intrigued. The next day he brings Lupita, a Brazilian socialite, to the shop, and once she leaves he asks Madeleine out. She keeps refusing, even when he offers to buy up all her stock, and gives in only after he stops asking.
