Plot summary
In England, Otis Madison and John Geste are friends from boyhood. Otis is in love with Isobel Brandon, and Isobel is betrothed to John. Otis is an American, and when he learns that John has enlisted in the French Foreign Legion, he decides to sail for Africa and bring his friend back to England. He enlists in the Legion himself. John is confined in a prison for disgraced Legionnaires, and the men who put him there give no thought to Isobel or to the message Otis carries. Otis's detachment is ordered to garrison a desert fort, while Isobel waits in England.

- Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was set to play Otis Madison but Warner Brothers recalled him before filming so he could star in a sequel to The Dawn Patrol that was never made; Lester Vail replaced him, making his screen debut.
- The film brought two technological firsts: the concentrator microphone, developed by RKO to filter noise on exterior shots and first used during this production, and the Dunning process, used to adapt the film for foreign-language versions.
- Ray Lissner, the picture's assistant director, wrote the film's only song, the marching song of the French Foreign Legion, but it appears the song was dropped from the final version.
