Plot summary
Bill Hayward walks out of prison after serving eight years for drug offenses and returns to his old neighborhood in East London. He finds his two sons living on their own: Dean, fifteen, quit school to work and look after eleven-year-old Jimmy after their mother left. Dean tells Bill he is not wanted. Bill's former associates Dickie and Terry offer him work in drug dealing, but his parole conditions make him refuse; he intends to leave for Scotland and a job on the oil rigs. At a parole meeting Bill learns that the boys, underage and without a guardian, will be placed in foster care. Bill is unwilling to become a father. Dean has taken Bill's drugs and threatens to call the police unless Bill stays.
