Iwan Rheon
Biography
Iwan Rheon is a Welsh actor and musician. Born in Carmarthen and raised in Cardiff, he began acting as a teenager and joined the Welsh soap Pobol Y Cwm before training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. On stage he played Moritz Stiefel in Spring Awakening, winning the 2010 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical. He then became known as Simon Bellamy in Misfits, a role that brought a Golden Nymph nomination, and later as Ramsay Bolton in Game of Thrones. His films include The Rise (2012) and The Dirt (2019), where he played Mick Mars. He has also appeared in Vicious, Inhumans, and Our Girl, and released several EPs and the album Dinard (2015).

A role that slipped away
Rheon auditioned for the role of Jon Snow in Game of Thrones but lost the part to Kit Harington, and was later cast in the same series as the villainous psychopath Ramsay Bolton.
First role
Rheon was 17 when he originated the part of Macsen White in the Welsh language soap Pobol Y Cwm. He later left the show to study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.
Behind the award
Rheon won the 2010 Olivier Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Musical for playing Moritz Stiefel in the London production of Spring Awakening, after the show closed five months earlier than planned.
A change of course
Rheon was the lead singer in the band The Convictions before he left to pursue acting, and he has written and sung since he was 16.
