Plot summary
The Philippine islands are still under Japanese occupation as American forces push closer in 1945. More than 500 survivors of the Bataan Death March are kept at a camp near Cabanatuan, where the Kempeitai put them to forced labor and deny them food, and where surrender is treated as a disgrace. Lieutenant General Walter Krueger orders Lieutenant Colonel Henry Mucci and his 6th Ranger Battalion to reach the prisoners before the camp's guards kill them. Mucci chooses Captain Robert Prince to work out how the raid will be done and to lead it. Inside the camp, the senior American officer, Major Daniel Gibson, is fighting malaria. Margaret Utinsky, who has known Gibson since before the occupation, helps the Filipino underground get medicine to the prisoners.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about The Great Raid (2005)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The real 1945 raid used a Northrop P-61 Black Widow night fighter as a diversion, but the filmmakers had to substitute a Lockheed Hudson on screen because none of the four surviving P-61s were still airworthy.
- Although most of the film was shot in Queensland, Australia, its Manila street scenes were actually filmed in Shanghai, China standing in for the wartime Philippine capital.
- Retired Marine Corps captain Dale Dye trained the cast at a real boot camp in northern Queensland for authenticity, reprising the same military-advisor role and method he had used on Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan and Platoon.
