Plot summary
Ernest Gordon, a captain with the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, is taken prisoner after the fighting in Malaya and Singapore and sent to a Japanese camp in Burma. He and the other Allied officers, among them Major Ian Campbell and Lieutenant Jim Reardon, are put to work on the Burma Railway, cutting a line through jungle. The prisoners face hunger, beatings and a discipline rooted in bushido, under which the guards treat Westerners as an inferior race; guards and Korean auxiliaries answer to the same harsh code. Campbell pushes for resistance while Gordon argues for endurance. The men take charge of the railway's engineering and set up a Shakespeare production and a jungle university to keep their self-respect.
