Plot summary
Charles Whittlesey, a New York lawyer before the war, commands roughly 550 soldiers of the 77th Infantry Division in October 1918. Major General Robert Alexander orders him into the Argonne Forest to halt a German advance. Alexander doubts the lawyer and regards his men, many of them immigrants and poor working class New Yorkers, as acceptable losses. Among Whittlesey's officers are Captain George McMurtry, a Rough Riders veteran, and Lieutenant James Leak, an inexperienced Texan. Whittlesey's men push through the German line, believing American and French troops hold the flanks. Those flanks have already been pushed back, and the battalion is surrounded. Riflemen under Captain Nelson Holderman join them, and the runners sent to headquarters do not return. Whittlesey reaches Alexander by carrier pigeon.
