Plot summary
In 1989, Anthony Swofford, called Swoff, goes through Marine Corps recruit training and is stationed at Camp Pendleton, in California, where he has a hard time and struggles to make friends. He feigns illness to avoid his duties, but Staff Sergeant Sykes notices his potential and offers him a place in the competitive Scout Sniper course. Eight Marines graduate, Swofford among them, and his roommate Corporal Alan Troy becomes his spotter. When Iraq invades Kuwait, his unit is sent to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield. The Marines expect combat, and they get remedial training, drills and routine chores instead, while the talk turns to the girlfriends and wives waiting at home.
