Plot summary
Scotland's lords have governed in the absence of Mary Stuart, and when the widowed queen returns from France in 1561 they question her at once. Her half-brother, James Stewart, Earl of Moray, leads the ruling noblemen and presses her on her Catholic faith and her choice not to marry. Elizabeth of England, Mary's cousin, tried to keep her from reaching Scotland and now works through Throckmorton, the new ambassador, to set Moray against the queen. The Protestant leader John Knox denounces Mary in public, and the Earl of Bothwell, a Protestant himself, answers him, pledges his loyalty and asks to be named Scotland's military chief. David Rizzio, her Italian secretary, urges her to marry Lord Darnley, a Catholic heir to the English crown, though she loves Bothwell.

- Mary of Scotland was a box office flop that lost $165,000 and was Katharine Hepburn's second flop in a row, earning her the label "box office poison" in the late 1930s and leading, after a two-year screen absence, to her 1940 MGM comeback in The Philadelphia Story.
