Plot summary

Deloris Van Cartier sings in a Reno club, where she is involved with the owner, gangster Vince LaRocca. After she sees him murder an informant, Vince orders his men to get rid of her, and she flees to the Reno police. Lieutenant Eddie Souther, who wants her testimony against Vince, puts her in witness protection at Saint Katherine's Parish, a convent in a struggling neighborhood of San Francisco. Disguised as Sister Mary Clarence, Deloris clashes with the Reverend Mother over the rigid routine. She befriends the upbeat Sister Mary Patrick, the elderly Sister Mary Lazarus and the shy novice Sister Mary Robert, and after the Reverend Mother orders her to join the convent's lackluster choir, her singing experience puts her in charge of it.
