Plot summary
After their mother Francesca dies, Michael and Carolyn Johnson come to the Iowa farmhouse to settle her estate and find that she asked for cremation, with her ashes released at Roseman Covered Bridge instead of a burial beside Richard, her late husband. In a safe deposit box are photographs, letters and a key that opens her locked hope chest, which holds three notebooks, old cameras and National Geographic magazines. The notebooks return to the summer of 1965, when Francesca, an Italian war bride from Bari, stays on the farm while her husband and teenage children go to the state fair. Robert Kincaid, a National Geographic photojournalist in Madison County to photograph its covered bridges, arrives to ask the way to Roseman Bridge.

- Amblin Entertainment, the production company founded by Steven Spielberg, bought the film rights to Waller's novel for $25,000 in late 1991, before its publication; by the time the film was released the novel had sold 9.5 million copies worldwide.
- The MPAA ratings board initially gave the film an R rating over a single line spoken sarcastically by Francesca, but Eastwood appealed and the rating was reduced to PG-13.
- Eastwood filmed the story chronologically from Francesca's point of view, finishing ten days ahead of his 52-day schedule, because, as he put it, "We were two people getting to know each other, in real-time, as actors and as the characters."
- Catherine Deneuve and Isabella Rossellini did screen tests to play Francesca, but despite Spielberg's initial reluctance, Eastwood had advocated Meryl Streep for the role from the beginning.
- Spielberg enjoyed rewriting the script with Eastwood and Richard LaGravenese so much that he considered making Bridges his next film after Schindler's List, which was in post-production at the time.
