Gail Patrick

Biography

Gail Patrick was an American actress and television producer. Born in Birmingham, Alabama, she worked as acting dean of women at Howard College before entering a 1932 Paramount contest that led to a studio contract. Often cast as a bad girl or romantic rival, she appeared in more than sixty feature films between 1932 and 1948, including Stage Door (1937), My Man Godfrey (1936), and My Favorite Wife (1940), in which she played Cary Grant's second wife. After such roles became less common, she left acting and moved into production. As president of Paisano Productions, she developed the Perry Mason series for CBS, serving as its executive producer for its nine seasons from 1957 to 1966. She became one of the first female producers and later held leadership posts at the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Her work on the series earned her the Mystery Writers of America's Raven Award in 1960.

Patrick disliked being in front of the camera so much that she avoided watching her own films. In 1979 a friend gave her a print of My Man Godfrey, and she saw herself on screen for the first time.
