Joyce Compton
Biography
Joyce Compton was an American actress who got her start in films after winning a personality and beauty contest and working briefly as an extra. She was born in Lexington, Kentucky, and studied dramatics, art, music and dancing for two years at the University of Tulsa. In 1926 she became one of the WAMPAS Baby Stars, which first brought her notice. She went on to appear in over 200 movies, mostly B-pictures, from the 1920s through the 1950s. A comedy performer, she objected to being stereotyped as a dumb blonde. Her credits included Imitation of Life (1934), The Awful Truth (1937), and Christmas in Connecticut (1945), along with The Best Years of Our Lives and Mildred Pierce. The motion picture industry honored her contributions with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in the 7000 block of Hollywood Boulevard, on its south side.
