Plot summary
A cat narrates the story of four siblings, Tim, Jane and the twins both named Barnaby, whose parents care only for each other and keep love, food and music from their children. The family comes from an accomplished line, and Tim longs for its past glory. When Jane finds an infant on the doorstep and carries her inside, the parents order the children not to return until they have gotten rid of the baby. The siblings leave the baby, whom they name Ruth, at Commander Melanoff's candy factory, then assemble a brochure of dangerous vacation spots so that their parents will go away. The parents leave at once, and Linda, the nanny they hired, arrives. Jane and the Barnabys take to her quickly, while Tim stays wary.
