Plot summary
Howard 'Red' Stevens, a billionaire oil magnate, dies, and the family gathers for the reading of the will. His grandson Jason Stevens lives on a trust fund and resents the old man, since his father died working for him. The estate leaves Jason no cash but twelve tasks, each called a gift, to be completed in a year before he can claim the Ultimate Gift. Red's attorney, Mr. Hamilton, and his secretary, Miss Hastings, oversee the arrangement. His first assignment is a month on a Texas ranch owned by a friend of his grandfather. Jason returns to find his home, his car and his savings gone, and Caitlin, his girlfriend, walks out when he asks her to cover a bill. Sleeping in a park, he meets Alexia, a young mother short of money, and her daughter Emily.
