Plot summary
Standing outside the action, a Stage Manager speaks to the audience and calls up the town of Grover's Corners, New Hampshire, for them, across the years 1901 to 1913. The town is an ordinary one, and its people go about their daily routines in that stretch of time. George Gibbs and Emily Webb are two of those residents, and it is their relationship that the account follows.
