Plot summary
Faith grew up on her father Calvin's North Carolina farm, then left for New York, where she married Luke, a singer. Luke's Wall Street employer is prosecuted over a Ponzi fraud, and Luke's silence, meant to spare the family a scandal, puts him in jail. Penniless, Faith takes his advice and returns to Calvin's farm, where her widowed father and her dutiful older sister Olivia, who stayed behind, still live. Their mother died suddenly years ago, and the family never settled the emotions her death left behind. Faith meets Lee, a country boy, and falls in love again, though Luke stays in her thoughts.
