Plot summary

Helen Shelley is a former Hollywood siren, now faded and forgotten in a London retirement home. Word arrives of her ex-lover's funeral in France, on the island of Île de Ré, and she sets her mind on being there and staging a comeback. She has to get out of the building and cover the distance, so she coerces Priscilla, a repressed English housewife, into helping her escape. The two hit the road together, racing to reach the funeral on time. Along the way they become involved with Alberto, a reclusive artist, and Helen's selfish, egocentric, manipulative manner sits oddly beside Priscilla's timid one.
