Plot summary
John and Jenny Grogan marry and leave Michigan for South Florida, where each takes a reporting job at a different newspaper. Jenny lands prominent front-page assignments at The Palm Beach Post, while John writes obituaries and short news items at the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. John's friend and co-worker Sebastian Tunney proposes a dog as a way to gauge whether the couple is ready to raise a family. They pick a yellow Labrador puppy, and John calls him Marley, after Bob Marley. After a year Marley weighs about 100 pounds and remains incorrigible, so they enroll him in a dog obedience program, which soon expels the unruly dog. John's editor, Arnie Klein, hands him a twice-weekly column on any subject he likes; with no idea at first, John decides Marley's misadventures could fill it.
