Plot summary
Bruce Nolan is a field reporter for Eyewitness News at WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York, and he wants to move up to the anchorman job. On assignment in Niagara Falls, word reaches him that the position has gone to his rival, Evan Baxter. Bruce erupts in crude fashion while the cameras are on, and the station dismisses him. In his anger he ridicules God, then gets a pager message that leads him to a warehouse. There God appears in human form and offers Bruce the powers for a week as a test. Bruce cannot tell anyone he has them, and he cannot use them against another person's free will.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Bruce Almighty (2003)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- God was given a real phone number instead of the usual fictional 555 exchange, so a North Carolina church whose minister was named Bruce, a Florida woman who threatened to sue Universal Pictures, a Wisconsin pastor and a Manchester sandwich shop owner all got hundreds of calls from people wanting to talk to God.
- Bruce Almighty was banned in Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Kuwait and Qatar for showing God as an ordinary man and for being blasphemous to Islam. Malaysia and Egypt later lifted their bans after their censorship boards gave the film their highest rating, 18-PL in Malaysia's case.
- Its $67.9 million opening weekend was the biggest of any Jim Carrey film, beating How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and the record stood until Sonic the Hedgehog 2 opened in 2022.
