Plot summary

Ulysses is fourteen and lives with his mother, Amara, and his younger brother. His father has recently died, so his father's sister Rose, who is conservative, helps look after the boys while Amara is at work. Classmates bully him at school, and Rose threatens him at home for his feminine characteristics. He escapes into imagined worlds of dance and music and is also thinking about his own gender identity. One night he ventures out into the city and meets Ebony, Dijon, Raymond and Heaven, a group of gay and transgender individuals. Ebony invites him to Saturday Church, a program held at a church every Saturday that feeds and provides shelter for LGBT youths. He takes an interest in voguing and buys a pair of high heels for practice.
