Plot summary
Seventeen-year-old Mia Hall has spent years on the cello, and an audition at Juilliard could take her to New York, away from Adam, her boyfriend and the guitarist in a band that has just signed a record deal. When a snow day closes school, her father Denny, her mother Kat and her little brother Teddy take her along on a drive to her grandparents' farm. Another vehicle strikes the family car on the road. Mia finds herself outside her own body, following the paramedics and the ambulance to the hospital, where a nurse tells her that whether she stays alive is a decision only she can make.

- Catherine Hardwicke was attached to direct the adaptation, but was replaced by the Brazilian filmmaker Heitor Dhalia, who also left the film later on.
- In December 2010 it was announced that a film based on the novel If I Stay was in the works at Summit Entertainment, with Dakota Fanning, Chloë Grace Moretz and Emily Browning all in talks to play Mia.
- Vancouver-based alternative rock band Hawking appeared in the film numerous times as the fictional band Willamette Stone, and all the songs for Adam Wilde's band, including the cover of The Smashing Pumpkins' song "Today", were produced by indie rock producer Adam Lasus.
