Plot summary
Alistair Ryle and Miles Richards begin their first year at Oxford. Miles is good-natured and even-tempered, while Alistair is arrogant, insecure and unfeeling. The two share tutorials, and Alistair scorns Miles's left-leaning politics. Miles begins a relationship with Lauren, a first-year student whose family is Northern and working class. The Riot Club is an exclusive all-male drinking society that prizes hedonism and holds that money can buy anything. It keeps ten members, all educated at private schools, and needs recruits. Harry invites Alistair, and Hugo invites Miles; both join after an initiation. Barred from most Oxford establishments, the club holds its annual dinner in the function room of a country pub.
