Plot summary
Grace Haverstock is a young widow in England in 1665, after the Great Plague has taken her husband. Witch-hunts against women are sweeping a society consumed by fear and death. When Grace refuses the advances of her landlord, she is charged with witchcraft and jailed. Her case is handed to Judge Moorcroft, England's most ruthless witch-hunter, and she is placed in his custody. He submits her to physical and emotional torture, and she keeps insisting that she is innocent, while the Devil works his way into her mind.
